How to check an exchange’s FIU registration claim

“FIU registered” is meaningful only when it is tied to the correct legal entity and current official evidence. It describes anti-money-laundering reporting obligations—not product approval or protection from loss.

01

Record the exact legal entity

A brand can use different companies for the website, INR services, custody or overseas products. Read the current terms, privacy notice, deposit instructions and complaint details. Record the company name, registered address and the service you intend to use before checking a registration claim.

02

Start with FIU-IND, not a comparison blog

FIU-IND publishes VDA reporting-entity guidelines, registration circulars and enforcement-related notices. Search the current FIU website and its downloadable documents for the legal entity, not only the consumer brand. A screenshot or third-party “approved exchange” list can be incomplete, outdated or mapped to the wrong company.

03

Ask the exchange for a verifiable entity reference

If the official public material does not clearly resolve the claim, ask the exchange to identify the registered legal entity and the official evidence supporting its statement. Compare that answer with the entity named in your contract and payment route. Do not publish or rely on a registration number that cannot be authenticated.

04

Understand what reporting-entity registration means

The VDA framework brings specified exchange, transfer, safekeeping and related activities within PMLA reporting obligations. Those obligations can include customer due diligence, record keeping, monitoring and reporting to FIU-IND. They are designed for AML/CFT compliance, not for evaluating investment quality.

05

Registration does not prove safety

  • It is not an RBI banking or payment licence.
  • It is not a government recommendation or exchange ranking.
  • It does not prove reserves, segregation or solvency.
  • It does not guarantee deposits or withdrawals.
  • It does not insure customer assets or promise recovery.
  • It does not make every token, product or cross-border activity compliant.
06

Complete the non-regulatory checks

Review custody, proof and scope of reserves, withdrawal history, incident disclosures, complaint routes, fees, governing law and concentration risk. Test deposits and withdrawals with an amount you can afford to place at risk before increasing exposure.

07

Verification checklist

  • I identified the exact company serving my account.
  • I checked current FIU-IND material rather than a search snippet.
  • I matched the exchange claim to the same legal entity.
  • I did not interpret registration as a licence or endorsement.
  • I separately checked custody, withdrawals, incidents and recourse.
  • I recorded the date and sources because registration status can change.
