Self-custody guide / Plan before absence10 min read • Reviewed 2 Aug 2026
Crypto inheritance and emergency-access planning
A seed phrase can provide technical control but not explain ownership, intent, tax history or lawful authority. Build an estate plan that connects those pieces without exposing the wallet today.
Technical access and legal authority are different
Someone who discovers a recovery phrase may be technically able to move assets, but that does not establish that they are the lawful owner or executor. Conversely, a legally authorized person may be unable to act if no usable recovery path or exchange record exists.
Build six connected layers
List asset types, exchanges, wallet models, networks and record locations without placing live secrets in the inventory.
Use an Indian estate professional to document who may act, inherit and access records under the applicable succession and nomination framework.
Design a tested path to the necessary credentials, devices, backups and signing threshold without creating one easy theft target.
Explain the sequence, wallet software, networks, contacts and verification checks in language the chosen person can follow.
Preserve acquisition cost, transaction history, tax statements, ownership notes and source-of-funds records.
Review after wallet, device, exchange, relationship, residence, legal or tax changes.
Keep the map separate from the keys
An inventory can name an exchange, wallet type, network and document location without containing a seed phrase or PIN. Store access secrets through a security design appropriate to the value and people involved, such as separated backups or a carefully tested multisignature plan.
Document the recovery sequence
- How to verify the plan and the person authorized to use it.
- Where to find the device, backup components and non-secret inventory.
- Which wallet software and networks are expected.
- How to verify addresses and avoid fake recovery support.
- Where original acquisition, tax and transaction records are stored.
- Which lawyer, accountant or technically competent person may assist.
Test without exposing the real wallet
Walk the trusted person through a non-secret inventory and a low-value demonstration wallet. Confirm that they understand the difference between a PIN, exchange password, private key and recovery phrase. Do not type the production seed merely to prove that the plan works.
Review after every meaningful change
Update the plan after changing residence, relationships, executor, wallet design, signing threshold, exchange, device or material asset holdings. Recheck Indian succession and tax treatment with qualified professionals rather than assuming an old template still fits.
